Meet the Team

The practice was started in August 2007 in Helderkruin Roodepoort. We moved to the mayo clinic Constantia Kloof in March 2015 and opened a second practice in the Virgin Active Roodepoort in April 2022.

Owner & Head Bio

Lara Leech

Lara chose biokinetics as a profession as it combines her passions in life. She loves working with people and is passionate about movement as a tool in recovery. We use movement as one of our tools in helping people rehabilitate after an operation, or injury, manage chronic conditions, improve their functional capabilities, and achieve optimal health and wellness. After sustaining a career-ending shoulder injury while playing collegiate tennis in the States, she realized how disabling and life-altering injuries can be. Lara is passionate and has a special interest in orthopedic rehabilitation and geriatrics. With over 15 years of experience, treating a variety of conditions ranging from the post-operative individual to the professional athlete.

Helping people with individualized programs to improve their functional capabilities is possible to reduce injuries, prevent disease and improve their quality of life. If we move better, we can live better. Exercise in essence is medicine. Exercise and rehabilitation can be fun.

Biokineticist

Marelie Maree

Her journey of becoming an Intern biokineticist all started at the North West University - Potchefstroom Campus. She completed her sport science diploma in 2018 and thereafter completed her bachelors in Human movement sciences in 2020. In 2021 she completed her honors degree in biokinetics at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Working with people has always been a passion of Marelies. Making a difference and meaning something in someone's life is one of the most rewarding and satisfying feelings. She is committed to helping people improve their quality of life through exercise with a special interest in orthopedic rehabilitation, health and fitness promotions as well as chronic disease management. She believes that a little laughter every day can go a long.

Biokineticist

Kent Clarke Gilbert

Kent is an Intern Biokineticist who shows a professional interest in the science of movement and final phase rehabilitation. He graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in 2021 with a BHSc honours degree in Biokinetics as a result of his lifelong passion for sport and movement, biokinetics has equipped him with the relevant knowledge and skills needed to apply specialised exercise rehabilitation to achieve various health outcomes.

Being a strong believer of ‘Exercise is medicine’, he has personally found great fulfilment in implementing his clinical experiential learning into this field. Being dependable, reliable and working closely with clients allows him to produce genuine long term results. Helping clients achieve their goals, inspiring and embracing ones uniqueness is what he incorporates into his daily life.

Scope of work

Biokineticists work with sports teams, physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Nurses, Doctors, and surgeons to treat patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Common tasks and duties include:

Diagnosing patients to determine a level of function by observing them stand, walk, and perform tasks, as well as listening to their concerns.
Developing and implementing plans to successfully discharge
Designing an individualized care plan based on their observations of the patient, the patient’s goals and expected outcomes, available research on the condition, and their medical expertise.
